J'ai trouver ca sur forum auto...
I have mentioned on here before that my neighbor is the service director at the local VW/Audi/Porsche dealership. Basically, this guy knows his stuff when it comes to anything in the lineup. I dropped my car off with him today for a 1000 mile checkup on the car. I don't think this is an official VW service, however, at this dealership they like to do a look over of the car at 1000 miles since the service interval is 10000 miles and they usually won't see the car again until that time. FYI, there is a recall on the electrical system that they have a software fix for...so you shall be seeing a recall notice soon (he performed the recall on my car).
To the point...
I started talking to him about the turbo issues and APR/GIAC/Uni etc tunes. In his opinion, the failure of the turbos has nothing to do with a car having a tune on it. I specifically asked him about failing turbos in cars with the APR tune and his exact words were, "it is not the fault of the tune."
They have in fact been having problems with turbos failing (which we know by the various turbo revisions). I did not get into the specifics, however, as I understood it, the most recent revision of the turbo is actually from a new manufacturer and they have not seen failures in the most recent revision to this point. He said the point in which the failures have stopped is after week 27 of the 2014 build year.
He also said that if the turbos fail, they usually fail very early, within the first couple of thousand miles. Even though there are a significant number of failures, the actual percentage of bad turbos is quite small and is actually more prevalent on the A3 for some reason. For this reason they are still doing repairs on a case basis. VW is obviously aware of the problem and they do not seem to be pushing the issue with mods.
He also told me to go get an APR tune...or GIAC ;-)
So the cliff notes are...
1. There is a known problem with the turbos and VW has been addressing the issue
2. So far there have not been reported failures after 2014 week 27 build date
3. The APR tune (or other tunes from reputable companies) are not the cause of premature failure
I am not going to release the name of the dealership or the name of my source since this conversation was off the record.
